C.C. Baxter, karyawan biasa di perusahaan asuransi Consolidated Life, punya trik licik untuk menaiki tangga karier: ia meminjamkan apartemennya kepada para eksekutif perusahaan untuk urusan gelap mereka. Namun, segalanya jadi rumit ketika bos besar, Sheldrake, ikut memanfaatkan "jasa"-nya.
