Perang Dunia I, Prancis. Kolonel Dax memimpin pasukannya dalam serangan mustahil yang diperintahkan oleh jenderal yang haus pujian. Ketika pasukan mundur akibat kegagalan misi, para prajurit dihukum karena "pengecut"—padahal mereka hanya korban keserakahan atasan.
