Hidup Apu kecil di desa India penuh warna, tapi juga getir. Ayahnya, seorang penyair miskin, menghabiskan warisan untuk melunasi utang saudaranya. Ibunya, Sarbojaya, berjuang keras menghidupi keluarga sambil menahan hinaan tetangga karena Durga, kakak Apu, sering mencuri buah.
