Di pedesaan Prancis yang suram, Mouchette, seorang gadis muda yang terabaikan, menghadapi kehidupan yang kejam dengan diam. Ibunya sekarat, ayahnya acuh, dan dunia seolah terus menghinanya. Suatu malam, dia bertemu Arsene, pemburu liar desa yang mengira dirinya telah membunuh polisi setempat.
