Di Jepang abad ke-17, ribuan samurai jatuh miskin setelah klan mereka dibubarkan. Hanshiro Tsugumo, seorang ronin bermartabat, meminta izin untuk melakukan harakiri di rumah bangsawan. Namun, ia justru menemukan kebenaran mengerikan tentang menantunya yang dipaksa bunuh diri dengan pedang bambu tumpul.
